Instagram analytics: read your numbers without fooling yourself

Instagram analytics are free and built into the app: views, accounts reached, accounts engaged and, from 100 followers, the times your followers are most active. They tell you what happened, not what to do. To turn them into a decision (which topic, which slot), you have to cross-reference them, which your AI does in one request with PlugKit.

Where to find your Instagram analytics

In the app, go to your profile and tap the professional dashboard, just below your bio (that’s the path Buffer describes). You’ll find an overview there: views, interactions, new followers and the content you shared.

According to Instagram’s Help Center, these insights are free as soon as your account is public. There’s also an overview on instagram.com, and each post, story, Reel or live video has its own insights.

The 4 numbers that matter

Here are the definitions from Instagram’s Help Center, read on 24 October 2026:

Metric What it counts
Views How many times your content was displayed or played (Reels, posts, stories, live videos, ads)
Accounts reached Unique accounts that saw your content at least once, broken down by country, city, age and gender
Accounts engaged Unique accounts that interacted, split between followers and non-followers for posts, stories and lives
Total followers From 100 followers: growth, top locations, age range and the times they’re most active

Instagram notes that accounts reached and accounts engaged are estimates still in development. Read them as trends, not exact counts.

The 3 most common reading mistakes

1. Mixing up points and percent. In video 4, my PlugKit stats page showed, over 30 days, 23 posts (+283.3%), reach up 158%, and an engagement rate of 6.12%, down 5.7 points. PlugKit’s documentation spells it out: a volume changes in percent, a rate changes in points. Minus 5.7 points is not minus 5.7%.

2. Reading “active” as “interested”. The times your followers are most active tell you when they open the app. Buffer stresses it: that’s not necessarily when they interact with you.

3. Reading too early, or reading a blank as a zero. According to PlugKit’s documentation, Instagram insights settle over roughly 24 hours. And a missing value isn’t a zero: Instagram replaced impressions with views, so an old post may carry one and not the other.

Make your stats talk with your AI (the video 4 demo)

Native analytics show the numbers. They don’t tell you what works for you or when to post. That’s the question I asked Claude on 22 October 2026, with PlugKit connected to my accounts (the demo is in French):

  1. The card on what works for you (my dashboard was in French). On PlugKit’s home screen, its “Open in Claude” button opens a prewritten request: analyze my 20 best posts, find three patterns, suggest five post ideas.
  2. My extra sentence. Also give me the best posting slots (day and hour, Paris time) from my stats, and tell me whether my data is enough to conclude. Read only: don’t publish, schedule or create anything.
  3. Five read permissions. Claude asked to read my account, my post ranking, my posting hours and my key numbers. Reads only: I allowed each one once.
  4. The answer. Scope: 90 days, 31 posts, and no LinkedIn stats. Three recipes that work for me: the demo where the AI acts on its own, my numbers-backed consulting experience, and a first-person hook that delivers the result right away.

Two remarks were worth more than everything else. The line “Tell me in the comments” never triggered more than two comments: topics get people talking, not the call to action. And on timing, Claude said no: 25 of my 31 posts went out between 12 and 1 p.m., so my data couldn’t settle the question.

Instagram account analysis: what PlugKit adds to native insights

  • All your networks in one place. One request reads Instagram, Facebook, TikTok and YouTube together.
  • Posts published outside PlugKit. A post published from the Instagram app is counted too, marked as external.
  • Comparison with the previous period, over a window of the same length.
  • Follower history. As the documentation puts it, no network gives you back your follower count from last Tuesday. If nobody measured it that day, it’s gone.
  • The best-times grid, weekday by hour, to look for your posting slot on the page about the best time to post on Instagram.

Limits

  • 90 days of history on the Creator plan and during the trial, 550 days on Pro.
  • LinkedIn isn’t read. It was missing from my stats, and the documentation doesn’t list it.
  • Claude analyzes, it guarantees nothing. With few posts, one lucky post can skew a slot: that’s the third limit in video 4.

Frequently asked questions

How do you see your Instagram analytics?

In the app, go to your profile and tap the professional dashboard below your bio, then your insights. Instagram's Help Center adds that you can also see an overview on instagram.com, plus insights for each post, story, Reel or live video.

Are Instagram Insights free?

Yes. Instagram's Help Center says that if your account is public, you can use free insights about your followers and how your content performs (read on 24 October 2026).

How do you see views on Instagram?

Views are part of your insights overview. Instagram defines them as the number of times your content was displayed or played: Reels, posts, stories, live videos and ads. For a specific piece of content, open its own insights.

Do Instagram Insights show who viewed your profile?

The Help Center only describes numbers and breakdowns: accounts reached and accounts engaged, by country, city, age range and gender. It mentions no list of individual viewers (read on 24 October 2026).

Where do you find your Instagram engagement rate?

Instagram's Help Center doesn't list it among its insights. Buffer calculates it this way: likes, comments, shares and saves, divided by followers, times 100. PlugKit shows it directly in its summary, with its change in points.
