The best time to post on Instagram: what your own account says
There is no universal best time to post on Instagram. Later says 5 a.m., Buffer says Thursday at 9 a.m., Sprout Social says Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons, Hootsuite says early mornings and early evenings. Three of the four only agree on a weak day: Saturday. Your best slot comes from your own stats, as long as each slot has enough posts behind it.
What the 4 studies say
Four tool vendors publish a yearly “best time to post” study. I read all four on 24 October 2026. Every one of them gives times in your audience’s local time: 2 p.m. means 2 p.m. where your followers are.
| Study (published) | Best slots | Best day | Weakest day |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sprout Social (31 Mar 2026) | Mon 2 to 4 p.m., Tue 1 to 7 p.m., Wed 12 to 9 p.m., Thu 12 to 2 p.m. | Tuesday and Wednesday | Saturday and Sunday |
| Buffer (23 Sept 2026) | Thu 9 a.m., Wed 12 p.m., Wed 6 p.m. | Wednesday | Friday and Saturday |
| Later (21 Apr 2026) | 5 a.m., whatever the day | Monday | Saturday |
| Hootsuite (14 Jul 2026) | early mornings and early evenings, mostly early in the week | Monday, Tuesday and Thursday | not stated |
And their scope, because a number without its scope means nothing:
- Sprout Social: nearly 2 billion engagements across about 307,000 profiles from more than 30,000 customers worldwide, from 27 November 2025 to 27 February 2026, across six networks including Instagram.
- Buffer: 9.6 million Instagram posts sent through Buffer, from January 2024 to December 2025, ranked by median engagement rate.
- Later: more than 6 million Instagram posts, from January to October 2024. The article is dated 2026; the data is from 2024.
- Hootsuite: more than 1 million business posts, with times localized across 118 countries. The period is not stated; the text refers to Hootsuite’s 2025 analysis.
Why the studies contradict each other
Each study measures the customers of its own tool. Accounts that publish with Sprout Social don’t necessarily look like the ones using Buffer or Later: industries, sizes and countries differ, so the averages differ too.
Timing and method matter as well. Later looks at 2024, Buffer at 2024 and 2025, Sprout Social at a single winter. Buffer uses the median engagement rate (likes, comments, shares and saves, divided by followers), so a handful of viral posts can’t skew the result.
The clearest example: Later finds that posting between 3 and 6 a.m. beats the average every day. Buffer ranks 1 to 5 a.m. as the worst window of the week. Both are right about their own data. Neither is about your account.
If your audience is in one region
None of the four studies publishes results for a single country. Hootsuite is the only one that breaks results down by time zone:
| Time zone (Hootsuite) | Best slots |
|---|---|
| Eastern (EST) | Saturday 11 a.m. |
| Central (CST) | Wednesday 11 a.m., Saturday 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. |
| Mountain and Pacific (MST, PST) | Saturday 9 a.m. |
| Central European (CET) | Monday 7 to 8 p.m., Thursday 4 to 6 p.m. |
| UTC | Monday 2 to 7 p.m., Tuesday 4 to 7 p.m., Thursday 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. |
Notice how Saturday mornings come out on top across the US time zones, while three of the four global studies rank Saturday as weak. Treat any of these as a starting hypothesis, not a rule.
Your account size changes the answer too
Later also splits its results by account size. For accounts with 1,000 to 5,000 followers, the best time is Monday to Friday at 5 p.m. For accounts above 500,000 followers, Monday at 10 a.m.
Its explanation makes sense: a small account has a more geographically concentrated audience, while a large one has followers awake somewhere at every hour. If your account is small, averages built on millions of posts apply to you even less.
What my account says: Monday and Thursday at noon
PlugKit, the tool I tested in my PlugKit review, has a best-times grid. Here is what it shows for my Occirank posts over 30 days, in Paris time (read on 24 October 2026):
| Slot | Posts in the cell | Average engagement |
|---|---|---|
| Monday 12 p.m. | 8 | 12 |
| Thursday 12 p.m. | 11 | 9 |
Four other cells held a single post each. Useless, even with a good score.
Put that next to the studies: none ranks Monday noon first. Sprout Social says 2 to 4 p.m., Buffer 7 p.m., Later 5 a.m., Hootsuite 3 to 9 p.m. For Thursday, only Sprout Social lands on the same hour, with 12 to 2 p.m.
The catch, Claude pointed out in video 4: over 90 days, 25 of my 31 posts went out between 12 and 1 p.m. So my data compares days, not hours. I don’t know whether 6 p.m. would do better, because I almost never tried it.
Your “best slot” may just be the hour you post the most.
Find your own slot in 4 steps
1. Check when your followers are online
In the app, open your professional dashboard, then your follower insights. According to Instagram’s Help Center, follower trends, including the times your followers are most active, show up once you have 100 followers.
Buffer flags the limit: these are the hours your followers use the app, not necessarily the hours they engage with you.
2. Read your results by day and hour
This is what PlugKit does: it sorts your posts into a weekday by hour grid and computes the average engagement of each cell, over the last 30 days by default. It also counts posts published straight from the Instagram app, not only the ones that went through PlugKit.
Ask your AI for it and give your time zone: “Give me my best posting slots in my local time, and tell me whether my data is enough to conclude. Read only: don’t publish anything.” PlugKit’s documentation is blunt about it: a grid read in the wrong time zone is off by your whole offset, with no error message.
3. Drop the thin cells
PlugKit’s documentation says it plainly: a cell with one post is a coincidence, not a slot. Always look at the post count before the average. My four single-post cells are the proof.
4. Test three slots
Take one slot from the studies, one from your Instagram insights, and your best cell. Publish the same kind of content in all three for several weeks, then compare. In my demo, Claude suggested six weeks and five posts per slot.
Limits to know before you change your schedule
- Instagram insights are estimates. The Help Center says so for accounts reached and accounts engaged: they are estimates still in development.
- Numbers take time to settle. According to PlugKit’s documentation, Instagram insights settle over roughly 24 hours. Don’t judge a slot on a post published two hours ago.
- History is limited. PlugKit lets you read 90 days on the Creator plan and during the trial, 550 days on Pro.
- A small account moves fast. With few posts, one lucky post can turn an average slot into your “best” one. That’s the third limit in video 4.
- Timing won’t save a weak post. Buffer says it itself: content quality matters most, timing improves reach.
The pages below cover each network, each day of the week, and how to read your Instagram analytics to find your own slot.

Frequently asked questions
When is the best time to post on Instagram?
It depends on the study. Sprout Social and Buffer put the peak on weekdays, mostly Tuesday to Thursday; Later finds 5 a.m., on 2024 data; Hootsuite points to early mornings and early evenings. Start with a study slot, then check it against your own posts over several weeks.
What are the best days to post on Instagram?
Wednesday for Buffer, Tuesday and Wednesday for Sprout Social, Monday for Later, and Monday, Tuesday and Thursday for Hootsuite. Three of the four studies rank Saturday among the weakest days (read on 24 October 2026).
What is the best time to post on Instagram today?
Look up today in Buffer's day-by-day list: Monday 7 p.m., Tuesday 7 p.m., Wednesday 12 p.m., Thursday 9 a.m., Friday 10 p.m., Saturday 9 p.m., Sunday 9 p.m. Then check the matching day page below, because other studies give other hours.
What is the best time of day to post on Instagram?
Buffer finds evenings (6 to 11 p.m.) beat mornings on every day except Thursday. Later finds the opposite, 3 to 6 a.m. above average every day. Sprout Social favors midday to evening, from 12 to 9 p.m. on Wednesdays.
Do I need a paid tool to find my best time to post?
No. Instagram's professional dashboard shows when your followers are most active once you have 100 followers. A tool like PlugKit adds a weekday by hour grid of your own results, posts published from the app included. It costs $49 a month for 5 accounts after a 7-day free trial (prices read on plugkit.co on 24 October 2026).
What is the best time to post Reels on Instagram?
Sprout Social finds the same windows for Reels as for everything else (Monday 2 to 4 p.m., Tuesday 1 to 7 p.m., Wednesday 12 to 9 p.m., Thursday 12 to 2 p.m.). Buffer recommends evenings, 6 to 11 p.m., especially Wednesday and Thursday. Later, across 975,000 Reels, finds midnight and Mondays.
