Buffer vs PlugKit: schedule or converse?
Buffer vs PlugKit, the short answer: pick Buffer if you mostly schedule posts across many networks, want to start free and are fine paying per channel. Pick PlugKit if you also want to answer DMs, send your link to everyone who comments and run it all from your AI assistant, at a flat price per tier of accounts.

Verdict
Buffer is a scheduler: it publishes to about a dozen networks, handles comments and reports on results, with a free plan and $6 per channel. PlugKit publishes too, but its home turf is conversation run by your AI: DMs on Instagram, Messenger, WhatsApp and Telegram, comment-to-DM, follow-ups. We tested its comment-to-DM on a real Instagram account on October 22, 2026: the DM arrived within seconds. If you only schedule posts, Buffer. If you want your AI to reply and follow up as well, PlugKit.
Choose Buffer if
- You want to start at $0: the Free plan covers 3 channels and 10 scheduled posts per channel.
- You only publish, on few accounts: $30 a month for 5 channels on Essentials, versus $49 on PlugKit.
- You post to Pinterest, Google Business Profile, Mastodon or Substack.
- You want to reply to TikTok, YouTube or LinkedIn comments from one inbox.
Choose PlugKit if
- You want Instagram, Messenger, WhatsApp and Telegram DMs in a single inbox.
- You want comment-to-DM, broadcasts and follow-up sequences, none of which Buffer mentions as of October 24, 2026.
- You run 30 accounts: $97 a month on PlugKit versus $135 on Buffer Essentials billed monthly.
- You want to drive both publishing and conversations from Claude or ChatGPT through one MCP server.

The real difference: scheduling or conversations
Buffer is a scheduling tool. You connect your channels, fill a queue, Buffer publishes on time, measures results and lets you reply to comments in a shared inbox. It does this across about a dozen networks, with a free plan. Solid, simple and cheap.
PlugKit starts from the other end. It’s an API and an MCP server that give your AI assistant (Claude, ChatGPT and others) access to your accounts. You say what you want, your AI drafts it, you approve, PlugKit runs it: publishing, but also reading and answering DMs, sending your link to people who comment, following up with a lead.
So the real question isn’t “which is better”. It’s: do you only need to schedule posts, or do you also need to hold conversations?
Publishing to your networks: both do it
On publishing, Buffer covers more ground. Its channel list includes Instagram, Facebook (Pages), TikTok, LinkedIn (Pages and profiles), X, YouTube Shorts, Threads, Pinterest, Google Business Profile, Bluesky, Mastodon and Substack. PlugKit publishes to Instagram (feed, reels, stories), a Facebook Page, TikTok, YouTube, X and your LinkedIn profile: no Pinterest, no Google Business Profile, no LinkedIn company Page.
The difference is in how you publish. With PlugKit you don’t fill in a form: one sentence to Claude produces one draft per network, each with its own caption. We filmed it (in French, with an English summary):
Post to all your social accounts with one sentence to Claude (no code)
Coming on the channel on October 27, 2026
Open the channelOne honest point: PlugKit’s dashboard editor has a single caption field (we used the interface in French). To write a different caption per network, you go through your AI or the API. If you prefer a classic scheduling interface, that’s Buffer’s turf.
Replying to comments and DMs
This is where the two tools really part ways.
- Buffer: an inbox to manage and reply to comments on Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, YouTube, X, LinkedIn, Threads and Bluesky. No private messaging is mentioned on its pages as of October 24, 2026, nor comment-to-DM, sequences or broadcasts.
- PlugKit: one inbox for Instagram, Messenger, WhatsApp and Telegram DMs, reading and replying to Instagram and Facebook comments, comment-to-DM, broadcasts and follow-up sequences. On the other hand, its documentation says TikTok and YouTube don’t expose messaging to third-party apps.
What we measured in our own tests: a PlugKit welcome message went out 8 seconds after a new contact’s first DM, and the follow-up was set at 23 hours rather than 24 to stay inside Meta’s window. The other demos are in our PlugKit review.
That window matters. In Occirank’s Instagram inbox, checked October 24, 2026, only 3 conversations out of 160 were still within 24 hours of the person’s last message. Past that, Meta blocks free-form messages: a DM tool doesn’t get around the rule, it helps you reply in time.
Buffer pricing vs PlugKit: per channel or per account tier
Buffer charges per connected channel, with graduated tiers: on Essentials billed monthly, $6 for channels 1 to 10, $4 for 11 to 25, $3 for 26 to 50, then $1. Team costs $12 per channel for 1 to 10, then $4, $3 and $2. PlugKit charges per tier of accounts: $49 up to 5, $97 up to 30, then $3 per account from 31 to 100. Prices read October 24, 2026, billed monthly (taxes not specified on the pages we read):
| Accounts | Buffer Essentials | Buffer Team | PlugKit |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5 | $30 per month | $60 per month | $49 per month (Creator) |
| 10 | $60 per month | $120 per month | $97 per month (Pro) |
| 30 | $135 per month | $195 per month | $97 per month (Pro) |
The math for 30 channels on Essentials: 10 × $6 + 15 × $4 + 5 × $3 = $135. Billed yearly, Buffer quotes about $5 per channel on Essentials (about $25 for 5 channels); PlugKit doesn’t publish a yearly price. Plan-by-plan detail is on our Buffer pricing and PlugKit pricing pages.
The rule of thumb: to publish only, Buffer Essentials costs less below 20 channels and from 70 channels up. From 20 to 68 channels, PlugKit Pro costs less; at 69 channels both come to $214; at 100 channels, Buffer Essentials comes to $245 versus $307 for PlugKit. As soon as you need DMs, the comparison changes: Buffer doesn’t mention them. PlugKit has two variable costs: X API calls, passed through at cost and capped at $20 a month by default, and Reel Studio video credits, sold separately beyond the included ones (10 credits for $15).
Running it from your AI: two MCP servers, two scopes
Good news for Buffer users: Buffer has a public GraphQL API from the Free plan and an official MCP server (https://mcp.buffer.com/mcp), with no plan specified. From Claude, you can read your channels, manage your queue, schedule and edit posts, capture ideas and read post analytics. API quotas range from 3,000 requests a month (Free) to 15,000 (Team).
PlugKit’s MCP server (https://api.plugkit.co/mcp) covers 103 tools according to its documentation: publishing, plus messaging, comments, automations, broadcasts, sequences, analytics and Meta ads. In Claude, you add a custom connector with that address, sign in, and you’re done.
Bottom line: if your AI only needs to schedule, both work. If it also needs to reply, triage your inbox and follow up, only PlugKit documents that.
What Buffer does better
- Entry price: a permanent free plan, then $6 per channel.
- Publishing coverage: Pinterest, Google Business Profile, Mastodon and Substack, which PlugKit doesn’t cover.
- Comments across networks: TikTok, YouTube, LinkedIn and X in the same inbox.
- Teams: unlimited users, content approval and access permissions on the Team plan.
- LinkedIn analytics: PlugKit has none on that network.
Moving from Buffer to PlugKit (or keeping both)
You don’t have to migrate everything. The simplest setup can be Buffer for scheduling and PlugKit for conversations. If you want to switch:
- List your Buffer channels and what you post on each.
- Keep Buffer for the networks PlugKit doesn’t cover (Pinterest, Google Business Profile, Mastodon, Substack), if you post there.
- Start the PlugKit trial with your Instagram account: only one account can be connected during the trial, so test the one that gets the most DMs.
- Recreate your next posts with your AI. Example request: “Schedule this reel for Tuesday at noon on Instagram and TikTok, with a caption adapted to each.”
- Remove the same posts from your Buffer queue, so nothing goes out twice.
For options beyond these two, our Buffer alternative guide sorts seven tools by need.
The classic trap: scheduling the same post in both Buffer and PlugKit. Your followers will see it twice.
Frequently asked questions
Is Buffer free?
Partly: the Free plan covers 3 channels, 10 scheduled posts per channel at a time, 1 user and 30 days of insights. Paid plans come with a 14-day trial; if you don't add a payment method, the account drops back to Free (Buffer pages read October 24, 2026).
Does PlugKit have a free plan?
No. PlugKit offers a 7-day free trial with no credit card and one connected account during the trial. After that, Creator costs $49 a month for 5 accounts and Pro $97 for 30 accounts (prices read on plugkit.co on October 24, 2026).
Which one is cheaper?
For publishing only, Buffer Essentials is cheaper up to 19 channels on monthly billing ($96 at 19 channels). From 20 channels it goes above PlugKit Pro's $97. But they don't do the same job: PlugKit includes DMs, Buffer covers more networks.
Can Buffer reply to Instagram DMs?
Its inbox is built for comments. No private messaging is mentioned on Buffer's official pages read October 24, 2026, nor comment-to-DM, sequences or broadcasts.
Can I run Buffer from Claude?
Yes. Buffer has an official MCP server (https://mcp.buffer.com/mcp) that reads your channels, manages your queue, schedules and edits posts, captures ideas and reads post analytics. PlugKit does the same for publishing and adds DMs, comments and conversation automations.
Does PlugKit post to Pinterest?
No, and not to Google Business Profile either. PlugKit publishes to Instagram, a Facebook Page, TikTok, YouTube, X and LinkedIn member profiles. If Pinterest matters to you, Buffer covers it.
