The right Buffer alternative for your job

The right Buffer alternative depends on what you're missing, not on a ranking. To post and answer DMs from your AI assistant: PlugKit, the only one we tested on a real account (October 22, 2026). For comment-to-DM inside a classic dashboard: Metricool. To schedule for less: Publer. For teams and agencies: Sendible. To build on an API: Zernio. And if all you do is post on a small budget, Buffer still does the job.

Why people look for a Buffer alternative

Start with what Buffer does well, because it’s often the reason to stay. Buffer, the social media scheduler, publishes to about a dozen networks: Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, LinkedIn, X, YouTube Shorts, Threads, Pinterest, Google Business Profile, Bluesky, Mastodon and Substack. It has a free plan (3 channels), a low entry price ($6 per channel per month on Essentials), an AI assistant on every plan, a public API, and even an official MCP server so you can schedule from an AI assistant.

People who go looking for a Buffer alternative usually hit one of three walls, all visible on Buffer’s official pages as of October 24, 2026:

  • Direct messages. Buffer’s inbox is for comments. No private messaging, comment-to-DM, follow-up sequences or broadcasts are mentioned. WhatsApp and Telegram aren’t on its channel list.
  • A bill that grows with every channel. Buffer charges per channel, meaning each connected social account. On Essentials, billed monthly, 30 channels cost $135 a month; on Team, $195. The full math is on our Buffer pricing page.
  • Free plan limits: 10 scheduled posts per channel at a time, and one user.

How we picked these Buffer alternatives

We sorted tools by need, not from best to worst. For each one we checked:

  1. The job it covers: publishing, DM conversations, teamwork, coding.
  2. The entry price read on October 24, 2026, and what pushes the bill up (channel, account, seat, active contact).
  3. Free plan or trial.
  4. Comment-to-DM, API and MCP server.

Facts come from each vendor’s official pages, read October 24, 2026. PlugKit is the only tool Jérémy tested on a real account, and it’s the only affiliate link on this page. When a feature isn’t on a vendor’s page, we write “not mentioned”, never “missing”.

Buffer alternatives, need by need

1. Post and answer DMs from your AI: PlugKit

PlugKit is an API and an MCP server that give your AI assistant (Claude, ChatGPT and others) access to your accounts. It publishes to Instagram (feed, reels, stories), a Facebook Page, TikTok, YouTube, X and your LinkedIn profile. And it does what Buffer’s pages don’t mention: one inbox for Instagram, Messenger, WhatsApp and Telegram DMs, comment-to-DM on Instagram and Facebook, broadcasts and follow-up sequences.

We tested it on Occirank’s Instagram account on October 22, 2026: someone comments “AUTO” and gets a public reply plus the link by DM within seconds. The full test is in our PlugKit review. The video is in French; an English summary sits underneath.

Send your link by DM to every Instagram comment (no code) (Video in French) PlugKit connected to Claude: a comment-to-DM automation created in plain language, then tested with a real account. Three limits: one message per comment within 7 days, the 24-hour window, the price.

Prices read October 24, 2026: $49 per month for 5 accounts (Creator), $97 for 30 accounts (Pro). Our PlugKit pricing page does the math for your number of accounts. 7-day free trial with no credit card, one connected account during the trial. To be fair about its limits: no free plan, no Pinterest or Google Business Profile, LinkedIn member profiles only, and no visual calendar highlighted. The full breakdown is in Buffer vs PlugKit.

2. Comment-to-DM inside a scheduling dashboard: Metricool

If you’d rather stay in a classic dashboard with a calendar and analytics, Metricool is a close Buffer alternative that adds DM automation. Its Flows turn comments into DMs and reply to story replies by DM on Instagram, at “no extra cost for a limited time”.

  • Price: Free plan (1 brand, 20 scheduled posts per month, no LinkedIn or X), then $25 per month for 5 brands billed monthly ($20 billed yearly).
  • Strengths: deep analytics and reports, Facebook, Google and TikTok ads tracking, an MCP server even on the Free plan.
  • Good to know: X is a paid add-on, and neither WhatsApp nor Telegram is on its network list.

3. Schedule for less per account: Publer

Publer does the same job as Buffer with per-account pricing. Its Professional plan costs $4 per account per month billed yearly, versus about $5 per channel on Buffer Essentials billed yearly. Its Free plan covers 3 accounts (X excluded) and 10 scheduled posts per account.

It also publishes to Telegram (channels and groups) and WordPress, and bulk-schedules up to 500 posts from a CSV file. The API and MCP server come with the Business plan ($8 per account billed yearly). No private-message inbox is mentioned on its pricing page.

4. A visual, Instagram-first calendar: Later

Later is for people who think in Instagram grids: visual calendar, best times to post, first comment, product tagging, Reels audio and a full link in bio. Starter costs $25 per month ($18.75 billed yearly) for 8 profiles, one per platform, with 30 posts per profile per month.

The social inbox only arrives with Growth ($50). Its pricing page mentions no public API, no MCP server and no comment-to-DM.

5. Work as a team or an agency: Sendible

On Buffer, unlimited users mean the Team plan, which doubles the price of your first 10 channels ($12 instead of $6). Sendible includes unlimited users on every plan, with one workspace per client, a “Priority Inbox” and real-time streams for comments and DMs.

Core costs $35 per month for 6 profiles; Plus, $99 for 18 profiles with assignments and approvals. 14-day trial with no card. No public API, MCP server or DM automation is mentioned on its pricing page. If you’re also weighing a suite like Sprout Social, read our Sprout Social vs PlugKit comparison.

6. Publish through an AI agent with open-source software: Postiz

Postiz publishes to 30+ channels (including Reddit, Discord, Mastodon and WordPress) and can be driven by MCP, CLI or API from the Standard plan at $29 per month for 5 channels. Its source code is open source (AGPL-3.0), so you can self-host it. It also generates AI images and videos.

Its official pages mention no private-message inbox and no reading of incoming comments. Like Buffer, it’s a publishing tool.

7. Build your own integration: Zernio

If you’re building your own product, Zernio (formerly Late) is an API covering 16 social platforms, messaging, comments, comment-to-DM (with a follow gate), sequences and broadcasts. Your first 2 accounts are free, no card needed. After that, $6 per account (accounts 3 to 10), $3 (11 to 100), then $1: $48 for 10 accounts according to its pricing.

Several meters add up (accounts, messages beyond 10,000 a month, X, ads), so the budget is less predictable than a flat plan. At 30 accounts its pricing comes to $108 a month, versus $97 on PlugKit.

When to stay on Buffer

Switching tools costs time. Stay on Buffer if:

  • You only publish, no DMs. Up to 19 channels, Essentials billed monthly costs less than PlugKit Pro ($96 vs $97 at 19 channels, and $30 vs $49 at 5 channels).
  • You post to Pinterest, Google Business Profile, Mastodon or Substack, which PlugKit doesn’t cover.
  • You want to start at $0 with 3 channels.
  • You already schedule from Claude through Buffer’s MCP server, and publishing is all you need.

And if DMs are the only gap, you don’t have to choose: keep Buffer for your posts and add a conversation tool next to it. For a wider view of the market, our guide to the best social media management tool for each need goes further.

Quick test: list what you do on social every week. If “reply to DMs” is on the list, Buffer alone won’t cover it.
